The Senate recently adopted an amendment to the financial reform bill that will:
- Allow retailers to set minimum and maximum payment requirements for customers who use cards
- Allow the federal government to arbitrarily set a price for debit card acceptance
- Allow retailers to discriminate against certain types of cards, forcing some of their customers to pay more
This amendment has already made its way through the Senate, but there is still a narrow but critical opportunity to prevent it from becoming law.
